The US comic book publisher and creator of some of the most popular superheroes, Marvel, has unveiled its newest project: a Nigerian female superhero called Ngozi, created by acclaimed science fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor.A panel from the forthcoming Blessing In Disguise Marvel comic book, featuring Ngozi, a Nigerian girl coming to grips with her new superpowers. The title was written by acclaimed science fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor. (Image: Marvel Comics)CD AndersonNgozi will headline in a new title in September 2017, Blessing in Disguise, with its story, written by Okorafor, set in Lagos. It will feature appearances by Black Panther and Spider-Man villain Venom. The character Ngozi, Okorafor told the BBC, was a teenager with a disability whose life changed “in an instant” when she encountered elements of the supernatural Venom-verse (universe) and acquired superpowers. Ngozi’s look and personality is based on the Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped by the Boko Haram militant Islamist group in 2014. Okorafor said it was an important detail to the character design to draw attention to the incident. She worked closely with artist Tana Ford to recreate an accurate representation of Nigeria and its capital Lagos. “I wanted to capture the action and vibrancy of the city. It is an awesome city with great people, with lots of potential for adventure and backstory. The city helps the story almost write itself.”The story itself uses both the tropes of the Marvel Universe – the hero’s journey, good versus evil and redemption – and elements of Afro-futurism that blend ancient African mythology with technology. The cover of Nnedi Okorafor’s 2010 sci-fi novel Who Fears Death? which will be turned into a TV series by US cable network HBO in 2018. (Image: Nnedi Okorafor)Okorafor is familiar with these concepts, having written more than 20 novels and short stories in the young adult science fiction genre, including the critically acclaimed Binti, which won the Nebula and the Hugo science fiction novella awards. She also won the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa award for her debut novel, Zahrah The WIndseeker. Her 2010 novel Who Fears Death? has recently been optioned for a series at US cable network HBO, with Okorafor fan and Game of Thrones author George RR Martin acting as executive producer. The author hopes the Ngozi character will inspire the creation of more African comic book characters in the world of superhero fiction. “Nigeria, as well as other parts of Africa, has a very strong fan base for comics and science fiction, and a growing artist and writer community exploring elements of the genre with a distinctive African feel.”For more information on the Marvel title Blessing In Disguise, visit the Marvel website. MONTREAL — Dozens of Quebec tourists are stuck in a Haiti hotel, unable to make it to the Port-au-Prince airport because of violent street protests. The hotel on the Caribbean country’s Cote des Arcadins is about 75 kilometres north of the capital. The only highway linking the all-inclusive Royal Decameron Indigo Beach resort to the airport is considered extremely dangerous, and people are staying off it.Air Transat, which sold package tours to the resort, says its flights between Montreal and Haiti are continuing, but it is unable to provide safe ground transport from the resort to the airport. Some tourists have told Quebec media helicopter transport is available to the airport but at a very high cost.Protests demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise have claimed several lives over the past week. SAN FRANCISCO — Nearly two dozen consumer, privacy and public health groups are urging U.S. regulators to investigate whether children are being endangered by deceptive apps in Google’s app store for smartphones running on its Android software. The 102-page complaint filed Wednesday with the Federal Trade Commission alleges Google’s Play store is harming kids by allowing apps that break privacy laws, contain adult content or include manipulative advertising in a section of its Play store designed for children. The call for FTC action is being led by two groups, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and the Center for Digital Democracy, that have previously attacked Google’s approach to kids. In April, they asked the FTC to crack down on Google’s YouTube video site for alleged violations of children’s online privacy.Twenty other groups, including Consumer Action, Public Citizen and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, joined in the latest complaint.Google issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to protecting children while they are online — one of the reasons the company says it prohibits targeted advertising at children under 13.“We take these issues very seriously and continue to work hard to remove any content that is inappropriately aimed at children from our platform,” Google said.More than 2 billion devices worldwide are powered by Google software, with a significant number of those being used by minors. The complaint focuses on alleged misconduct under U.S. laws and regulations. The attempt to pressure the FTC to open an investigation comes amid an intensifying backlash against Google, Facebook and other companies that make most of their money by using their free services to track people’s interests and whereabouts and then mining that information to sell ads targeted at them. The angst has raised the spectre of Congress drawing up tougher regulations to curb the tech industry’s power and restrict its ability to compile digital dossiers about the people who have become increasingly dependent on its services.Rep. David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island who has been critical of Google, issued a statement supporting the groups seeking an FTC investigation as did Sen. Tom Udall, a Democrat from New Mexico.“It is past time for the Federal Trade Commission to crack down to protect children’s privacy,” Udall said in a statement.Although the FTC doesn’t typically comment on whether it will investigate issues raised in complaints, it has punished both Google and Apple for what it deemed to be child exploitation in the past.In 2014, it reached a settlement requiring Google to refund $19 million for allowing apps distributed through its store to charge children for purchases made without parents’ consent. That came after a similar agreement required Apple to refund $32.5 million for in-app purchases made on iPhones, iPads and other devices without parents’ permission.Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press

United Nations: India has cautioned that attempts to “subsume” the South-South cooperation in the international aid architecture are not helpful and do no justice to the future potential of cooperation between developing nations. South South cooperation is about developing countries working together to find solutions to common development challenges, according to the United Nations Office for South South Cooperation. It describes the exchange of resources, technology and knowledge between developing countries. Yet, South-South cooperation retains its distinct nature and values, as well as diversity of forms and flows. It defies easy categorisation”. The trajectory of global growth and the declining share of ODA during the last decade or so has seen attempts to subsume South-South cooperation in the international aid architecture, he said on Thursday at the second high-level United Nations Conference on South-South cooperation in Buenos Aires. “Such efforts are not helpful. They do no justice to either its historical heritage or its future potential. Let us not venture to strait jacket South-South cooperation into a format that it cannot fit into,” Akbaruddin said. He told the conference that over the last decade, India has extended Lines of Credit of about USD 25 billion to more than 60 countries of the South. All projects follow universally recognised norms and do not create unsustainable debt burdens while ensuring skill and technology transfer to help local communities maintain and sustain assets created, the envoy said. Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici has accepted the favourites tag to win the Champions League this season following their impressive run of games. The Old ladies are working hard to end their Champions League hoodoo having reached the finals twice in recent years but lost to Spanish giants Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2017.However, the capture of Cristiano Ronaldo has given more room for optimism which was evident in their victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday.“We’ve been giving answers on the European stage for years,” Paratici said in the Press conference after today’s shareholders’ meeting, according to Football Italia.Lukaku backed to beat Ronaldo in Serie A scoring charts Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Former Inter Milan star Andy van der Meyde is confident Romelu Lukaku will outscore Cristiano Ronaldo in this season’s Serie A.“We went out of the Champions League at the last second against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, and we’ve played in two finals. We’re at a high level.“This year we have the role of favourites, and we’ve earned that by playing at a very high level in Europe.“We knew we could have a great game in Manchester and we did it.”
Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira conceded they were second-best to Atalanta and deservedly paid the price for it.Massimiliano Allegri’s side fell to their first domestic defeat of the campaign by losing 3-0 in Bergamo to Atalanta on Wednesday night to end their hopes of a fifth successive Coppa Italia crown.Even with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala in the starting line-up, Juventus were unable to threaten an Atalanta side that were clearly at the top of their game in front of their home supporters for the quarter-final tie.Right-back Timothy Castagne gave Atalanta the lead in the 37th-minute with Colombian forward Duvan Zapata then doubling their advantage before the break and then sealing the victory by adding a second goal late on.Juventus had chances though to get back into the game in the second half with Khedira’s volley representing their best chance in scoring. But the former Real Madrid star saw his effort denied superbly by Atalanta goalkeeper Etrit Berisha.Speaking after their quarter-final exit, Khedira acknowledged that the best team won on the night.Juventus confirm Mario Mandzukic could leave this month Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Sporting director Fabio Paratici confirmed reports that Mario Mandzukic could leave Juventus for a move to an unnamed Qatari team.“It’s difficult and sad to lose like that, but it’s part of football and we have to accept it,” said Khedira on the club website.“It wasn’t our best night and Atalanta had a great game. They deserved the win and we wish them good luck for the semi-finals.”Despite the setback, Khedira urged the team to bounce back and return their focus back to the Serie A.“These games can happen over the course of the season,” he said.“Of course, it hurts more when it’s a sudden-death game, but it won’t have any consequences for our league campaign.“We made too many mistakes and Atalanta took advantage of them – we didn’t deserve to go through.”Juventus will next take on Parma on Saturday in Turin for a Serie A match.
